Quite a lot of apps have switched over to the dark side, well not literally but from a visual aspect. However, there were still some apps from the Silicon Valley giants that were yet to be blessed with this dark mode. But finally, there is some good news in this regard. Three of Google’s most-used apps used from workflow purpose- Docs, Slides, and Sheets, have started receiving the dark mode feature.
The rollout has begun and it should to the entire userbase in a couple of days. Upon enabling the said feature, you could view your documents, presentations, and spreadsheets in a darker mode. However, some times, you might also need to view some graphs or diagrams in a lighter theme. Taking note of which, Google has also introduced a “View in light theme” option that just what its name says. So in such cases, rather tweaking with the dark theme you could use the aforementioned option. With that said, here are the required steps for the enabling of the dark mode on all these three apps. We will begin with the Docs app, followed by Sheets and then Slides.
How to Enable Dark Mode in Google Docs
- Launch the Google Docs app on your Android device.

- Tap on the hamburger menu situated at the top left and select Settings from the menu.
- Then under the Themes section, tap on Choose Theme.
- Finally, select the Dark option and that is it. You have successfully enabled the dark mode on Google Docs, now let’s turn our attention towards Sheets and Slides.
Enable Dark Mode in Google Sheets
- Launch the Google Sheets app.

- Tap on the three horizontal lines situated at the top left of your screen.
- This will launch a menu, select Settings from there.
- Then head over to the Themes section and select Choose Theme.

Enabling Dark Mode in Slides
- Open the Slides app on your Android device.

- Then go to Themes and you should see the Choose Theme option.

View in Light Theme Option in Google Docs, Sheets, and Slides
As mentioned before, in some cases, you might get the best view of a particular diagram or flow chart in the white background. Although completely disabling the dark mode is an option, but then it will make the entire app adopt to the white theme. So Google introduced a pretty nifty functionality that will only allow you to turn off the dark mode for that particular document, spreadsheet, or slide, whereas the entire app will still continue with the dark mode. That feature is known as View in Light Theme and the steps to enable it is same for all three apps. Here is how this could be achieved.
Enable View in Light Theme in Docs, Sheets, and Slides
- Launch your preferred app from the above-listed ones.
- Now open the desired document in which you wish to enable the said feature.
- Once opened, tap on the hamburger menu situated at the top right.
- Select the View in Light Theme option and that’s it. The selected document, spreadsheet, or slide will switch over to the White mode.
- Once you are done with it, again tap on that overflow menu and this time, you should see the View in Dark Theme, tap on it.
