Steps to Download macOS Big Sur Beta 1 Without Developer Account

If you’re not able to pay $99/year for the Apple Developer Account and still want to download and install the Developer Beta version on your macOS, then you can follow the steps below. Keep in mind that this is an early developer beta and may contain multiple bugs or stability issues or crashes. So, take a full backup of the device data at first and don’t install it on your primary working Mac as of now.

  • First, download the macOS Developer Beta Access Utility on your Mac.
  • Open the utility tool and install the beta update in order to enroll your Mac in Apple’s beta software program.
  • Launch System preferences > Click on Software Update.
  • Now, the macOS Big Sur update will appear.
  • Click on Upgrade Now.
  • Wait for the complete download and click on Install to start the update process.
  • You’re done.

Roll Back to macOS Catalina

  • As always, take a full backup at first.
  • Click on the Apple menu and Restart the system.
  • When your Mac reboots, press and hold the Command + R keys on your keyboard until the Apple logo appears.
  • Here select the Time Machine Backup option to Restore the macOS Catalina.
  • Click on Continue > Choose the Time Machine Backup Disk > Select the Time Machine Backup file that you want to restore. (If you don’t have any previously backed up data, then it can’t restore)
  • Finally, follow the on-screen instructions and wait for the downgrade process.
